2022 field campaign update

Today we celebrate that Dr. Le Moullec and Prof. Hansen together completed the first phase of their planned ColdRein fieldwork in Svalbard. They returned from the East coast triumphant, with some very promising reindeer bone and antler samples. One sample in particular may be the oldest material we have ever collected! We are very excited to see the carbon dating results for this one.

But not all went to plan, and there were some complications for the fieldwork. These included infections by Covid-19, as well as wind and heavy fog during an unseasonably warm period in Svalbard, and even the undesired presence of polar bears near the field location. All of this meant that fewer than expected bones could be collected during the boat landings.

The second phase of sampling in Dickson Land, a very promising dry part of Svalbard with inland plateaus and canyons, is ongoing …
